3 Important Tips When Moving Into Your New Home

You’ve found your dream home, the offer’s been accepted, and you’re set to start moving in. This is an exciting, yet stressful time. During this time, it’s easy to get wrapped up in excitement of the moment and start buying all sorts of furniture, decor, and other “must-haves” for your new home.

Before you start shopping for all those things you’re home needs, here are 3 things to keep in mind to not only save you money, but to your sanity too.

  1. Purchasing everything now. Because this is an exciting time, it’s easy to get wrapped up in decorating and setting up your home. Although you want to get your boxes unpacked, and things situated, if you’re running out buying all sorts of new furniture, you may be wasting a lot of money on items you may not really want or fits into your space.

Instead, before you run out to buy, grab a pen and start mapping out the room. Decide which items you’d like for which room, take measurements, and explore the possibilities of what you can do with your space.

  1. Overloading your space. If you decorate your home with no plan, you may find yourself trying to cram too much stuff into a small space. As you move into your new space, take some time to strategize on what you want to do and which items would fit where best. While you’re deciding on how you want to decorate your space, remember to piece things in a way that creates an openness with is both inviting and cozy.

This is also time to look at pieces you may no longer love or want, so if there is a piece of furniture you’d like to switch out now is the time to decide what you’d like instead.

  1. Don’t eyeball it. Another mistake people make when setting up their home is they don’t properly measure their space, and instead just eyeball it. The problem with that is, in many cases, you misjudge the space and end of with items which are either too big or too small for that area.

Save yourself the headache by pulling out your tape measurer. Also, while you’re measuring your space, be sure to measure the doorways. We tend to forget about these and then, when trying to get the couch, table, or another piece of furniture through the doorway, we find it too small.

This is an exciting time and one that shouldn’t stress you out—well, not too much. The more you can have a plan, know your space, and have the measurements, the more you’ll save yourself the headache and have an easier time setting up your space.
